How we secure your data
The Computer Society at the National University of Ireland, Galway fully respects your right to privacy and takes every appropriate measure to secure the privacy of any information shared with us.
CompSoc does not collect any personal information on this Web site without your permission. All information volunteered within online forms is treated as confidential in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1988 and Data Protection (Amendment) Act 2003. Personal information such as email addresses is requested by online forms for the sole purpose of enabling the recipient in CompSoc to reply to your message or to set up your account in our database.
Cookies may be used by this Web site to collect non-personal information about how visitors use our Web site. Cookies may also be used to remember your display preferences (e.g. preferred text size) the next time you visit. We use cookies as part of Google Analytics, a Web analytics service that enables us to track how visitors use our Web site. Google Analytics uses first party cookies. You may refuse the use of cookies by selecting the appropriate settings on your browser.
Temporary session cookies may also be used in some areas to enable specific functionality. Session cookies are deleted once you leave the Web site. Non-session cookies exist on your computer for 30 days after you have visited but they contain no private or sensitive data (e.g. the cookie that preserves your text magnification is called “fontsize” and only contains the number 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 depending on the magnification you last selected).
Some browser header information is automatically stored by the system to generate Web site usage statistics. IP addresses are read by the Web site to identify users located on the NUI Galway campus in order to offer them internal functionality.
If you sign up to the Computer Society or register for an account via this website, in person, at an event, socs.nuigalway.ie or anywhere else, we will hold your Name, Email Address(es), Mobile number and Student/Staff ID so that we can contact you to let you know of upcoming events. We will not disclose this Personal Data to any other internal or external organisation without your consent unless required to do so under University, Irish or EU regulations.
Please note that User owned data and other Personal Data may be stored on third party servers for the purposes of backups and archiving. Your data may be transferred to HEAnet and Amazon Web Services within the Republic of Ireland for these purposes. We will take all reasonable steps to ensure that this data is properly safe-guarded by means of encryption (if possible) in line with regularity requirements and best practice.
The NUI Galway Computer Society does not use malware, spyware, or adware in any form or fashion. We take security very seriously as one of core aims every year. We regularly audit our systems to ensure they are patched and welcome any feedback or comments from our members (and the University community as a whole).
NUI Galway CompSoc uses every appropriate physical and technical security measure to prevent unauthorised access, alteration or destruction of data. These measures are reviewed regularly by our Admin Team.
The NUI Galway Computer Society will not disclose any personal information obtained from its Web site to any party outside of the Society unless required by Corporate Policy or Irish/EU law to do so.
